How to tell the difference between different breeds of dwarf hamster:

 

Text Box: Chinese - The Chinese is less readily available from pet shops as the other breeds of dwarf hamster. They have a long tail, unlike the other dwarf breeds and therefore have the nickname of ‘mouse like hamster'

 

 


Text Box: Campbell's Russian - This is the most common type of dwarf found in pet shops. They have a stripe running down their spine unless albino. The first picture is of the regular colouring of Campbell’s hamster. Text Box: Winter White – Winter Whites are very similar to the Campbell's Dwarf . The main differences in appearance are a thicker dorsal stripe and in the winter their coat can turn into a white colour except for the dorsal stripe. Changes in the coat in the winter are triggered by a change in day length (not a cooler temperature) and so due to artificial lighting this change may not always happen in captivity. The first picture shows a Winter White in its summer colours. The second picture shows a Winter White in its winter colours.  

 

 

 


 

 

 


Text Box: Roborovski - Roborovskis are the smallest of all dwarfs available to buy. They are easily distinguished from other dwarf hamster breeds by the lack of a stripe down the spine and by their white eyebrows.
