Dwarf/Russian Hamster Minisite

How to tell the difference between different breeds of dwarf hamster:

Text Box: Chinese - The Chinese is less readily available from pet shops as the other breeds of dwarf hamster. They have a long tail, unlike the other dwarf breeds and therefore have the nickname of ‘mouse like hamster'

Text Box: Campbell's Russian - This is the most common type of dwarf found in pet shops. They have a stripe running down their spine unless albino.
The first picture is of the regular colouring of Campbell’s hamster.
The second picture is of an albino and an argente Campbell’s.

Text Box: Winter White – Winter Whites are very similar to the Campbell's Dwarf . The main differences in appearance are a thicker dorsal stripe and in the winter their coat can turn into a white colour except for the dorsal stripe. Changes in the coat in the winter are triggered by a change in day length (not a cooler temperature) and so due to artificial lighting this change may not always happen in captivity.
The first picture shows a Winter White in its summer colours.
The second picture shows a Winter White in its winter colours.

Text Box: Roborovski - Roborovskis are the smallest of all dwarfs available to buy. They are easily distinguished from other dwarf hamster breeds by the lack of a stripe down the spine and by their white eyebrows.
